Athletes earn all-state honors

Several Quay County athletes earned all-state basketball honors last week from the New Mexico High School Coaches Association, including two from Tucumcari’s girls team.

Tucumcari junior point guard Ashley Shipley earned first-team honors in Class 3A, along with (Las Vegas) Robertson’s Alianza Darley, Tessa Ortiz and Jazmyne Jenkins and Navajo Prep’s Aiona Johnson.

Tucumcari senior guard Kalani French made Class 3A’s second team, along with Santa Fe Indian’s Leanna Lewis and Franki Maestas-Chavez, Robertson’s Jayden Jenkins, St. Michaels’ Joelyn Fernandez, Cobre’s Skkyla Guck and Hatch Valley’s Tavyn Trujillo.

In Class 1A girls, Logan senior forward/center Harlie Roach earned first-team honors, along with Tatum’s Celeste Jimenez and Maddy Rice, Melrose’s Nataley Mondragon and Quemado’s Angela Lackey.

Second-team members were Melrose’s Hailey Martin and Kiki Roybal, Roy/Mosquero’s Riley Clavel, Animas’ Tierney Washburn and Cliff’s Jamie Jenkins.

In Class 1A boys, Logan’s Dyson Day earned first-team all-state honors, along with Melrose’s Tate Sorgen, Fort Sumner’s Jude Segura, Maxwell’s Kolten Riggs and Quemado’s A.J. Lackey.

Day also was named to the Northeast small-schools all-star team, with games scheduled for May 31 and June 1.

Second-team members were Melrose’s Tristan Sena, Fort Sumner’s Noah Maxwell, Maxwell’s Jeremy Archuleta, Quemado’s Kenneth Atwood and New Mexico School for the Deaf’s Deven Thompson.
