Football players participate in all-star game

June 12, 2019

Two Tucumcari football players participated in the annual small-school North-South all-star game, with the North suffering a 19-3 loss Saturday at Nusenda Community Stadium in Albuquerque.

Rattler senior Kaleb Hayes started the entire game at strong-side offensive tackle for the North squad, and fellow senior Seth Martinez, a halfback for the Rattlers during the regular season, played at wingback for the North.

Rattlers coach Wayne Ferguson watched the game and said both “played well.” Ferguson said Martinez “didn’t get many opportunities” to carry the ball but he “had a run for over 30 yards that he almost scored on but was negated with a penalty.”

Rattlers wide receiver and defensive back Rod Dunlap was invited to play in the game but couldn’t because of a military commitment.

In volleyball, two seniors from the state-champion Logan team — Harlie Roach and Cassidy Cordova — played for the Northeast squad in the small-school all-star tournament last week.

The Northeast lost its match 3-1 to the Southeast but rebounded with a 3-1 victory in its consolation match against the Northwest. The Southeast defeated the Southwest for the bragging-rights title.

“I felt that both Cassidy and Harlie played great,” said Logan coach Robert Young, who watched both games. “They really raised their levels of play for the all-star matches and represented Logan well.”

In softball, Tucumcari senior Kalani French and junior Paige Moralez and Logan’s Kristi Earle, Brooke Robertson and Elizabeth Brown were invited to play for the small-school North team.

The South swept all three games last week by 16-2, 16-5 and 6-4 scores.
