Quay County set for three fireworks displays

Quay County residents will have three opportunities this week to observe Independence Day fireworks displays.

Tucumcari will host its annual fireworks show the night of July 4, Logan will host a fireworks display at Ute Lake State Park on Saturday night as part of its two-day Street Dance, and San Jon will host its fireworks display Sunday night at its village park.

The Elks Lodge on Tucumcari’s south side has hosted the city’s annual fireworks display for many years. The lodge and city split the cost of the annual $6,000 display, City Clerk Angelica Gray said. The Tucumcari Fire Department is in charge of setting off the fireworks.

The July 4 display is part of a one-time bulk purchase of fireworks that also will be used during the Fired Up festival in September and after touchdowns during Tucumcari High School football games, she said.

Marion Payton, exalted ruler of the Tucumcari Elks Lodge, said the Tucumcari display typically lasts for 30 to 40 minutes. Sunset on July 4 will be 8:13 p.m. local time, with total darkness about 9 p.m. Darkness can come sooner during cloudy conditions, however.

Logan’s Fourth of July Street Dance will host a fireworks display at nightfall Saturday at Windy Point on the north side of Ute Lake State Park. The Logan Bass Club sponsors the show.

The Street Dance features the Drake Hayes Band from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday on the street behind the Annex Bar & Grill in Logan.

On Saturday, Logan will host a parade at 10 a.m. on city streets just west of U.S. 54, a watermelon crawl from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Ute Lake State Park ballfield and a 1 p.m. horseshoes tournament at the state park.

Street Dance festivities include raffle prizes of $10,000 in cash, a $10,000 home remodel package, a three-seat SeaDoo Spark 3 watercraft and a Harley-Davidson Iron Sportster motorcycle. Tickets, which are $25, can be purchased at Subway and FNB locations in Logan and the Annex in Logan. Logan Chamber of Commerce members also will sell tickets at the festival. Winners will be announced at the end of the watermelon crawl Saturday.

In San Jon, the village’s annual fireworks display will be at nightfall Sunday at San Jon Village Park.

Festivities at the park include a free hot dog cookout and a bounce house for children starting at 6:30 p.m. in the park, said Michael Erwin, pastor of the First Baptist Church of San Jon, which is organizing the event.

Church members will take donations for the fireworks show and sell raffle tickets for $1 apiece at the park for the chance at winning a quilt. The church also will sign up children for its Vacation Bible School, set for July 8-10.
