1969: Newt and Juanita Nix of Tucumcari won a round-trip ticket to the Hilton hotel in Acapulco, Mexico, for their strong sales and merchandising of Norge appliances. Marvin Miller, a Norge territorial manager in Amarillo, presented the Nixes the prize. They beat out other Norge dealers in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

• Tucumcari Television Co. ran an advertisement for a fall cable-television special, offering the first month of service free with signup. It stated its cable-TV package offered seven channels, background music and a 24-hour weather channel.

• The Safeway market in Tucumcari advertised ground beef for 55 cents a pound with a three-pound purchase. It also offered sliced Gold Coin bacon for 73 cents a pound.

• The Odeon Theatre in Tucumcari was screening Franco Zeffirelli’s adaptation of a William Shakespeare play, “Romeo and Juliet.” The movie, which found popularity with teenage audiences, won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design.
