Logan takes first loss

The Logan volleyball squad suffered its first loss of the season to district rival Melrose during a 25-19, 22-25, 17-25, 25-27 decision in the title game Saturday of the Fort Sumner Tournament.

Logan fell to 9-1 overall. Melrose improved to 6-0.

“I thought we did some things well during the match and looked solid in many areas,” Logan coach Robert Young said. “We had moments, though, where we reeled off numerous errors and struggled getting back in sync.”

Both teams have traded the No. 1 ranking in the Class 1A coaches’ poll this season. Logan won four of five matches against the Lady Buffaloes last season, including during the Class 1A state championship match. They will face each other again during a crucial district match Sept. 27 at Melrose.

The Lady Longhorns cruised by Mesilla Valley 25-18, 25-18, 25-18 on Saturday at the tournament. Melrose breezed by host Fort Sumner 25-16, 25-20, 25-8 earlier that day.

Logan 3, Texico 1

Logan knocked off Texico, ranked No. 1 in the coaches’ poll in Class 2A, in a 25-16, 25-18, 20-25, 25-13 decision on the road Thursday.

“I felt like we picked up our level of play to match Texico,” Young said. “They are a very good team that makes very few errors. I thought our defensive intensity picked up, which helped a lot of our hitters get numerous kills.”

Logan improved to 8-0. Texico fell to 3-3 on the season.

Tucumcari 3, Raton 1

Tucumcari notched a road victory with a 25-20, 25-23, 26-28, 25-18 decision Thursday at Raton.

Jasmine Jones led the Lady Rattlers with 11 kills, while Felicity Lopez had nine. Reese Goldston made 26 assists.

“We passed really well,” Tucumcari coach Dana Benavidez said. “The passers set up the plays that put our setting and hitters in position to make points.”

Tucumcari improved to 5-5 on the year. Raton fell to 0-3 overall.
