1969: Tucumcari police officers Bill Owings and Gordon Edwards were dispatched behind George’s Texaco on Route 66 in Tucumcari because a cat was stuck in a pipe there. They called plumber Jack Speigelmire, who freed with animal with the help of a lasso around its neck.

• Richard D. Spence, the son of Myrtle Spence of Tucumcari, was appointed vice president of the Southern Pacific Railroad Co. Spence, 44, was the youngest vice president the company has ever had. He was a trainmaster, assistant superintendent and superintendent of the railroad’s Sacramento, Coast and Western divisions.

• Tucumcari’s three Shamrock gas stations were giving away a 16-ounce “Granada Gold” tumbler for each fuel fill-up of at least eight gallons.

• The Dairy Queen Brazier on Tucumcari’s First Street advertised 39-cent banana splits for a two-day period.

• The Odeon Theater in Tucumcari was showing a Clint Eastwood double feature of “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and “Hang ‘Em High.” The Canal Drive-In screened a double feature of “Contrabandistas del Caribe” and “El Silencioso.”
