1969: Two accidents were reported on U.S. 66 east of Tucumcari. A serviceman from Norfolk, Virginia, was injured 1.3 miles east of Endee when the left front tire blew, causing his car to overturn twice. The soldier was thrown from the vehicle and landed in a pasture, cutting his throat on barbed wire. He was transferred to a military hospital to treat his injuries. About 1.6 miles west of the Texas state line, a family from El Norte, California, escaped injury when the station wagon they were towing lost control when the driver braked hard at a rough section of pavement. The station wagon overturned after the vehicles jackknifed, destroying many of the family’s possessions in the station wagon.

• The Tucumcari boys basketball team was tied for seventh with Bernalillo in the preseason rankings in the state’s Class A poll. St. Michael’s received the No. 1 ranking. In Class B, San Jon was ranked No. 1 in the preseason ratings.

• The Odeon Theatre advertised the screening of a western, “Young Billy Young,” starring Robert Mitchum and Angie Dickinson.
