Logan girls triumph over Lordsburg

The Logan girls basketball team rallied from behind to defeat Lordsburg 44-40 Saturday in the championship game at the Dora Tournament.

Coach Glynna Strand said her Lady Longhorns (4-0) were down 15 points at one point in the game but “slowly worked out way back” with the help of their press defense.

“Free throws won the game,” Strand said, noting Karli Webb went 7-for-7 from the foul line to end the game with 15 points. “The last four points were free throws.”

Webb earned Most Valuable Player honors in the tournament. Kassi Foote, who scored nine points Saturday, won the Hustle Award, and teammate Jordan Hines was named to the all-tournament team.

Lordsburg fell to 2-1.

Logan 70, Portales JV 29

Logan cruised to the finals of the Dora Tournament with a 70-29 victory Friday over the Portales junior varsity team.

Hines scored 16 points to lead the Lady Longhorns, and Webb added 13.

Logan 39, Clayton 36

Kyndall Ragland scored 12 points to lead the Lady Longhorns to a hard-fought 39-36 win over Clayton on Thursday in the first round of the Dora Tournament.

Strand attributed the close game to “shots weren’t falling” and her team “still trying to work out the kinks” after a late start because many players will were playing volleyball until the first week of the season.

Hines added 11 points for Logan.

Clayton fell to 0-2.

Clovis Christian 58, Grady/San Jon 47

The Lady Bronchos fell behind early and lost 58-47 to Clovis Christian on Saturday in the third-place game of the Melrose Tournament.

The Eagles (3-2) jumped to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter and made it stand up.

“We played very flat today,” Grady / San Jon coach Alicia Rush said. “Clovis Christian played well and were ready. We will go back to the drawing board and keep working.”

Teryn Foote led the Lady Bronchos (3-2) with 23 points.

Melrose 67, Grady/San Jon 35

The Lady Bronchos found themselves overwhelmed by defending Class 1A runner-up Melrose during the semifinals Friday of the Melrose Tournament.

Melrose led 40-22 at intermission.

Foote led Grady/San Jon with nine points, and Krissy Grau added eight.

“Melrose is a good team with an established system,” Rush said. “Hat’s off to them. We are in the building stage; my girls played hard and tried to do what I ask of them. We had some moments of success for us that we will build on. We knew what we were facing with Melrose and are using this game as a starting point.”

The game was Melrose’s season-opener.

Grady/San Jon 55, Cliff 32

The Lady Bronchos handled the Cliff Cowgirls 55-32 Thursday during the first round of the Melrose Tournament.

Foote led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points, while Divinity Archuleta added 12. The Lady Bronchos led 36-23 at halftime.

It was Cliff’s season-opener.

Grady/San Jon 70, Elida 49

Led by Foote’s 33 points, the Lady Bronchos blasted host Elida 70-49 on Dec. 3.

Leading 33-23 at halftime, Grady/San Jon salted the game away in the third quarter when Foote scored 16 of her team’s 23 points.

Isabelle Martinez added 12 points for the Lady Bronchos.

Elida fell to 0-2.
