1969: Declaring it the “The Year of Apollo,” the newspaper devoted the back page to several photographs and a story about the United States’ successful manned moon landing earlier in the year.

• The Circle S Lounge and Golden Dragon restaurant advertised a “Dine and Dance” event for New Year’s Eve. They offered a steak dinner with champagne for $10, with music by Pat Allen’s Trio.

• The Odeon Theatre in Tucumcari was screening two movies over the weekend — “Some Kind of Nut,” starring Dick Van Dyke and Angie Dickinson; and “Viva Max!” starring Peter Ustinov, Pamela Tiffin, Jonathan Winters and John Astin.

• Safeway in Tucumcari offered USDA choice sirloin or round steak for 98 cents a pound.
