Rush named to all-state

Grady/San Jon senior forward Chisum Rush was named last week to the all-state team in Class 1A boys basketball.

The New Mexico High School Coaches Association announced its annual all-state teams for both boys and girls basketball last week.

Rush averaged a team-leading 17.0 points and 9.9 rebounds per game, both team highs for the Bronchos, who finished with a 12-12 record and competed in the rugged District 6 that included state-champion Melrose.

The 6-foot-3 Rush was a four-year starter at Grady. He finished his career with 1,967 points and probably would have surpassed 2,000 if not for a fractured thumb suffered late in the regular season and two canceled games.

Rush will play baseball next season at Luna Community College in Las Vegas as a pitcher. The right-hander led the state last season with 97 strikeouts in 44 1/3 innings.

Other first-team Class 1A players were Melrose's Tristan Sena and Tate Sorgen, Tatum's Sebastian Jimenez and Maxwell's Kolten Riggs.

Logan junior guard Dante Sanchez's made Class 1A's second team for all-state. Sanchez averaged 22.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for the Longhorns, which finished 15-14 and also played in District 6.

Other second-team players in Class 1A were Elida's Tyce Delk, Springer's Jose Urquijo, Melrose's Dylan Valentine and Maxwell's Kaden Riggs.
