NMAA releases modified sports schedules for coming year

The New Mexico Activities Association on Wednesday released its amended sports calendar for the coming school year.

As previously expected, almost all sports will have condensed seasons. Cross country and golf will begin their seasons first in mid-September, with volleyball starting in early October.

Basketball season begins Jan. 4 and football season Feb. 22. Wrestling season won’t begin until early April. Baseball and softball seasons will be largely unchanged.

Tentative dates for the start of the official season and state championship events for each sport are listed below. The dates are subject to change because of the coronavirus pandemic.

— Cross country: Start date Sept. 14; championships Nov. 13-14

— Golf (fall season): Start date Sept. 14; championships June 21-22

— Volleyball: Start date Oct. 5, championships Dec. 4-12

— Basketball: Start date Jan. 4; championships March 1-13

— Swimming and diving: Start date: Jan. 4; championships March 13 and 20

— Spirit: Start date to be determined; championships March 26-27

— Soccer: Start date Feb. 15; championships April 12-17

— Football: Start date Feb. 22; championships April 23-24, April 30, May 1, May 8

— Wrestling: Start date April 5; championships June 7-12

— Baseball: Start date April 5; championships June 21-26

— Softball: Start date April 5; championships June 21-26

— Golf (spring season): Start date April 5; championships June 21-22

— Tennis: Start date April 5; championships June 14-19

Track and field: Start date April 5; championships June 17-19 and June 24-26

The NMAA stated it wanted to ensure all sports would be played while limiting the overlap between each season so athletes still can participate in multiple sports.
