Parade of lights to be stationary

Instead of the annual Parade of Lights, the Tucumcari/Quay County Chamber of Commerce instead is hosting a drive-through Christmas Community Light Display the evening of Dec. 12 in the parking lot of the Tucumcari Convention Center.

The change was prompted with the ongoing restrictions created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The display will occur from 6 to 8 p.m. that night.

“It’s going to be a stationary parade,” chamber director Carmen Runyan said. “Some people call it a reverse parade, but it just so that it’s clear this isn’t going to be moving around, we’re calling it a light display. There are similar events happening in Clovis and other places, as well.”

Runyan said the decision was made to change the parade to drive-through display about a month ago.

“It’s something we’ve been talking about for a while,” she said.

One thing that won’t change is prizes will be given out to the top entries for each category after the event.

Anyone interested in participating should call the chamber at 575-461-1694. Entrees will be accepted up to the day of the event.
