Two coronavirus cases reported Saturday in county

The New Mexico Department of Health on Saturday reported two confirmed cases of coronavirus in Quay County, both in the Tucumcari ZIP code.

The Tucumcari region crossed the 200 mark with total cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began in March.

The age breakdown of the confirmed cases in the county was one age 20 to 29 and one age 40 to 49. One female and one male were infected.

The total number of cases in the county since the pandemic began rose to 269, with five deaths. A total of 87 people have been deemed by the state as recovered from the virus.

Quay County continued to see a higher rate of cases in recent days, with 22 so far in December.

The latest breakdown by ZIP code since the pandemic began is 201 in Tucumcari, 46 in Logan, seven in House, six in San Jon, four in McAlister, two in Nara Visa, two in Bard and one in Grady (part of which extends into the county).

According to the state’s COVID-19 rapid-response database, one confirmed case each was reported Friday at Denny’s restaurant and Lowe’s Market, both in Tucumcari. A typical rapid response consists of isolating positive cases, quarantining close contacts for 14 days, ceasing operations to the extent necessary to isolate affected areas, disinfecting these areas, implementing safety procedures and resuming operations. Typically, operations are ceased for fewer than 24 hours before it is safe to reopen.

In the state, the DOH on Saturday reported 1,925 cases. The total number in New Mexico since the pandemic began rose to over 106,000.

A total of 32 deaths were reported Saturday in New Mexico, raising the total to 1,738.

A total of 925 people in the state were hospitalized with the disease Saturday, a decrease of nine from the previous day.

In the U.S., more than 14.5 million confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported through Saturday since the pandemic began, with more than 280,000 deaths.
