Logan shows off skills

LOGAN - The Longhorns showed what they could do when two of their skill players aren't injured.

Logan quarterback Wyatt Wright, sidelined for a game after a concussion during a season-opening loss to Melrose, went 8-of-12 passing for 134 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another score during a 42-0 win Saturday afternoon against a young and inexperienced Menaul team in eight-man football.

Jordan Evans, who also was sidelined for one game after a concussion against Melrose, caught five passes for 67 yards and three touchdowns against the winless Panthers.

All told, Logan (1-2) amassed 286 yards of offense. Kaden Riggs and Christian Kotara also caught TD passes for the Longhorns.

Logan coach Dwayne Roberts said Wright and Evans being back gave his team a boost. Nick Brown, however, remained sidelined with an ankle injury suffered during last week's Fort Sumner game.

"It makes a huge difference," Roberts said of the return of those two players. "We still need one more running back, but we'll see what transpires between now and the game Friday at Tatum. We have to go down there ready to play; they're a good team."

The Longhorns could have ended the game via the mercy rule in the third quarter by scoring their 50th point. Roberts chose instead to play his second-string players. They nearly ended it anyway with a drive late in the fourth quarter but lost a fumble deep inside the red zone.

"We were able to get some young kids into the game to play today, so it was nice," Roberts said. "We needed this today."

Meanwhile, Logan's defense made life miserable for Menaul quarterback Ashton Tarin, who went 4-for-20 passing for 78 yards and an interception. He also lost two fumbles.

The Panthers' best weapon was Miguel Rios, who totaled 73 all-purpose yards.

Menaul lists just one senior on its roster, and coach Josh Baca noted many of his players have only one or two seasons of experience in football. The Panthers haven't scored any points this season - a far cry from last season's 9-1 squad.

"We are slowly but surely getting better," Baca said. "We'll be OK next year."

The closest Menaul came to scoring was when Rios hauled in a 40-yard pass from Tarin to Logan's 15-yard line.

But the Panthers went backwards on a quarterback sack and failed to complete three straight passes, ending the drive.

Logan led 12-0 after one quarter and 36-0 by halftime.

Before the game, Logan honored its senior football players and their parents. Seniors are Wright, Evans, Brown, Riggs, Eric Long, Dante Sanchez and Tyler Harris.
