Logan boys pick up district win

The Logan boys basketball team came from behind to pick up a key district victory Saturday with a 71-69 decision at Fort Sumner.

The Longhorns trailed 39-30 at intermission and were down 43-30 in the third quarter. Logan made three 3-pointers and eight free throws in the final period to seal the victory.

Dante Sanchez led the Longhorns (3-1) with 21 points.

Jordan Evans added 16 points, Kaden Riggs 15 and Brock Burns 12 for Logan.

“I was proud of the way the boys fought all night,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said. “We got down pretty big in the third quarter, and they could have easily gave in, but they continued to battle.”

Fort Sumner fell to 2-1.

Logan 72, Grady 46

The host Longhorns outscored the Bronchos 39-13 in the second and third quarters en route to a 72-46 district victory on April 6.

Sanchez scored 22 points to lead Logan. Riggs scored 19 and Wyatt Wright 15, with 14 rebounds each.

Griffiths said his team played much better than during its previous game, a loss to Clovis Christian.

“We picked our defensive intensity up and utilized our size,” he said.

Clovis Christian 70, San Jon 26

The Coyotes found themselves overwhelmed during a 70-26 district loss to the host Eagles on April 6.

Clovis Christian led 43-14 at intermission.

Chad Becerra led San Jon with 14 points.

“We’re a young team with low numbers working hard through trying times,” San Jon coach Chad Watson said.

Fort Sumner 92, San Jon 19

The visiting Coyotes fell behind 30-8 in the first quarter and 53-10 by halftime during a 92-19 district loss Thursday to Fort Sumner.

James Lacayo led San Jon with 11 points.

“We jumped out to a quick lead, and our kids gave a good try,” Watson said, “but they just had too many horses for us.”

San Jon ended the week with an overall record of 0-4.
