Logan girls take loss

A shooting slump by the Logan girls basketball proved fatal during a 43-30 district loss Saturday at Fort Sumner.

“We went dry in the second half,” Logan coach Glynna Strand said. “Couldn’t buy a bucket.”

Karli Cantrell led the Lady Longhorns with 11 points.

Logan fell to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the district.

The Vixens improved to 2-0.

Logan 52, Grady 50

The Lady Longhorns fended off a stiff challenge April 6 from district foe Grady during a 52-50 victory.

Grady seized a 14-3 lead early, but Logan clawed back to make it close the rest of the way.

Reece Goldson went 4-for-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to help seal Logan’s win.

“We also had some good pressure defense at the end where we got a couple of turnovers and were able to score,” Strand said.

Kambry Burns scored 18 points for Logan, and Kyra Conway added 16.

Teryn Foote scored 12 points to lead the Bronchos, and teammate Taylor Foote added 11.

Clovis Christian 64, San Jon 46

San Jon led 28-21 at intermission, but Clovis Christian took over in the second half during its 64-46 victory April 6.

By the last two minutes of the game, San Jon had only four players on the floor because the rest fouled out. (Clovis Christian shot 44 free throws to San Jon’s eight.) San Jon senior Bailey Montoya also dislocated a shoulder during the game.

Coyotes coach Jaree Elliott was greatly encouraged by her team’s fire and competitiveness.

“My girls played amazing ball, and to say I’m proud of them is an understatement,” she said. “Moving forward, if we carry that same fire and determination and execute our offenses and defense like we did into the rest of our games, we will se some victories both on the scoreboard and off. Both of my seniors (Nataya Archuleta is the other one) led my younger girls like champs on the court.”

Sofia DeGroot led the Eagles with 30 points, and Abby Lusk added 16 points and 15 rebounds. Lola DeGroot added 10 points and 16 rebounds.

Fort Sumner 49, San Jon 7

The Coyotes took it on the chin during a 49-7 district loss Thursday at Fort Sumner in the Vixens’ season opener.

San Jon ended the week 0-4 overall and 0-2 in district play.
