Tornado touches down near Logan

A storm system Monday evening produced several reports of severe weather in Quay County, including at least one tornado.

Trained spotters for the National Weather Service reported a tornado six miles north of Melrose, near the Curry-Quay County line, and another tornado sighting eight miles south-southwest of Nara Visa in northeast Quay County.

Several photos of a twister were posted on social media by the Logan Fire Department. It reported the tornado touched the ground for about five minutes east-southeast of Obar, starting about 5:30 p.m.

Quay County's emergency management system also sent out texts about the tornado sightings.

Quay County Sheriff Russell Shafer said Tuesday morning he received no reports of damage from the twisters except for possibly a downed power line.

Other severe weather was reported by weather spotters in the area.

Hail 0.88 inches in diameter was reported five mies west of House. Two-thirds-inch hail was reported eight miles south of Rosebud and quarter-inch hail in Nara Visa.

A 54-mph wind gust also was reported by a spotter that evening seven miles east-northeast of Tucumcari.

Much-needed rain also fell with the storm system, including 0.26 inches at Bell Ranch and 0.22 inches at Tucumcari Municipal Airport.
