1971: The Tucumcari-Quay County Chamber of Commerce held a special meeting yesterday with the Quay County Fair Board and Cowboys Club in an effort to coordinate schedules and prevent conflict with the annual fair and Pinata Festival, the latter which will be held Sept. 9-11. Officials noted the New Mexico Municipal League and the New Mexico Urban Renewal organization also were set to hold their conventions in Tucumcari that weekend. In addition, the Tucumcari High School Rattlers football team was hosting a game at that time.

• Their troubles behind them, Apollo 15 astronauts closed in silently on the moon after being given the go-ahead for a landing at the foot of the lunar mountains taller than the highest Rockies, according to a United Press International report. A short-circuit that had cast doubt the previous day on man’s most ambitious lunar explorations had been overcome, and a preliminary check indicated the Falcon landing ship was ready.

• The Odeon Theater in Tucumcari was screening a revival of the 1940 animated film, “Pinocchio,” along with a Disney short, “The Olympic Elk,” from 1952.
