Melrose stays undefeated

Melrose was undefeated going into Saturday’s home match against Logan, and it made sure it stayed that way with a 25-14, 25-16, 25-8 district victory.

The Lady Buffaloes, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, improved to 15-0 overall and 5-0 in District 6. Melrose is tied for first place with Fort Sumner in the district standings.

Logan fell to 11-6 overall and 2-3 in the district.

Lady Longhorns coach Robert Young was asked what his team will need to improve on in its next matchup at home against Melrose on Nov. 6.

“We will need to pass better,” he said. “We are having a hard time transitioning into any offense from our serve receive and defense.”

Fort Sumner 3, Logan 0

The Logan volleyball team suffered its second loss to Fort Sumner in a week Thursday when the Vixens prevailed 25-21, 26-24, 25-15 at Logan.

“We played them much better than last time,” said Young, referring to a three-set loss at Fort Sumner the previous week.

But he added his team “still made too many service errors.”

Fort Sumner, winners of 11 in a row through the weekend, improved to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in Class 1A’s District 6. The Vixens remained tied for first place with undefeated and top-ranked Melrose.

Fort Sumner 3, San Jon 0

San Jon lost a district match 17-25, 20-25, 14-25 on Saturday against a streaking Fort Sumner squad, but the Lady Coyotes performed better than during their previous matchup.

“The girls played very strong,” San Jon coach Jaree Elliott said. “As a team, they played very gritty and strong, and I was very proud of them, as (Fort Sumner) is a strong team.”

She in particularly praised Bailey McEwen’s hitting game, which kept the Vixens off-balance.

San Jon ended the week 9-7 overall and 2-3 in the district.

San Jon 3, Grady 0

The Lady Coyotes earned a solid 25-16, 25-13, 25-17 district victory Friday over area rival Grady.

“We had an offensively strong game and kept Grady out of its system much of the night,” Elliott said.

Chantzee Elliott led San Jon in aces, and Karlee Elliott led the team in kills. Coach Elliott praised Charmaynn Hall for her strong service game and passing.

Grady ended the week 2-12, 0-3.

Melrose 3, San Jon 0

Melrose maintained its undefeated campaign with a 25-10, 25-14, 25-17 district victory Oct. 12 over visiting San Jon.

“We had some of our highest moments of the season tonight but also had some rookie mistakes at crucial times,” Elliott said. “All in all, improvement each game is what’s important, and if we continue to improve from here, there should be some good things coming in remaining district play.”

Elliott praised McEwen for his errorless hitting and “amazing” defense and Dakota Fisher’s back-row defense. Karlee Elliott led the Lady Coyotes in kills, and Sarah Archuleta led the squad in assists.
