Logan drops regular-season finale to Melrose

Logan dropped its regular-season finale at home Friday to district arch-rival Melrose by a 62-36 decision but still gained the No. 4 seed in the eight-man football playoffs that begin this week.

Logan, which finished 7-3 overall and 1-3 in rugged District 2, will host Magdalena at 6 p.m. Friday. Magdalena finished 5-3 but captured the District 1 title with a 4-0 mark.

The Longhorns defeated Magdalena 42-28 on the road on Sept. 10.

The winner of the Magdalena-Logan matchup will play at No. 1 seeded Tatum (7-1), which has a bye, the weekend of Nov. 5-6 in the state semifinals.

The championship game will be Nov. 13.

Melrose (6-1) is the second seed, and Fort Sumner (7-2) is the third seed. Fort Sumner plays Mesilla Valley Christian in its opening playoff game. The winner plays Melrose, which also has a first-round bye.

Logan coach Dwayne Roberts said his team trailed by 14 points much of the contest against Melrose but had a chance to cut the margin to six late in the third period.

“Had a penalty that put us in a big hole and turned it over on downs,” he stated in a text Saturday about the critical series.

“The difference was two interceptions. One was run back for a touchdown, and they were able to score on the other,” he added.

Logan quarterback Brock Burns threw for four touchdowns. Speedy running back Hayden Judd scored four TDs, and fullback Park Strong scored one.

Roberts said he didn’t have final stats from the game but noted Burns, Judd and Strong had “a ton” of yardage against the Buffaloes.
