Lady Coyotes withstand Grady for road victory

The San Jon volleyball team withstood a challenge from district rival Grady during a 25-6, 18-25, 25-14, 25-19 road victory on Saturday.

Bailey McEwen of the Lady Coyotes served 10 straight points during the first-set win.

“The second set, we dug ourselves a huge hole right away and while we battled back and cut our losses tremendously, it was too little, too late,” San Jon coach Jaree Elliott said. “Third set, we came out slow again but turned things around.”

She said Karlee Elliott’s spikes and Sarah Archuleta’s serves were “a huge factor” in the turnaround.

“It’s always tough to beat Grady at their own house, and they have some good servers and had some good hits and we were not playing as fluid as we can,” the coach said. “But instead of giving up, my girls had more heart and, ultimately, that prevailed.”

San Jon improved to 10-9 overall and 3-5 in District 6.

Grady dropped their ninth straight match and fell to 2-16, 0-7.

San Jon closes its regular season by playing at Logan on Thursday and hosting Clovis Christian on Friday.
