1971: The Tucumcari Chamber of Commerce board members and newly elected directors traveled to House last night for their meeting. The group was welcomed at the House Community Center by a group of citizens that included Bruce Runyan, T.J. Coston, Ronald Hornseth and Ed Sparks, who also served refreshments.

• The Rev. John H. Johns, minister of the First Baptist Church in Tucumcari, resigned his position to accept a promotion with the Southern Baptist Home Missionary in the Willamette Valley in Oregon, effective Jan. 1. Johns had led the church for four years.

• The Tucumcari Rattlers basketball team, led by 19 points from Alex Cordova and Walter Hines, defeated the Logan Longhorns 80-64. Tucumcari improved its record to 3-1 overall.

• The Odeon Theatre was screening “The Cross and The Switchblade,” starring Pat Boone and Erik Estrada. The film adapted a non-fiction book of the same title, about a gang member transformed by the ministry of of small-town preacher.
