Lady Longhorns take Friday victory

A great day at the free-throw line helped lift Logan to a 33-25 victory Friday over district rival Melrose in the semifinals of the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Texico.

Nials led the Lady Longhorns with 10 points, while Goldston added eight.

Strand said the game was a defensive battle, with neither team making a 3-point shot.

Asked about the key to victory, Strand said: “We hit free throws better than they did.”

At the foul line, Logan converted 13 of 17 shots. Melrose went just 9-of-20.

Melrose fell to 6-4.

Logan 73, Grady 30

Logan began the Plateau EPAC Tournament on Thursday with a resounding 73-30 victory over host Grady.

Goldston led the Lady Longhorns with 15 points, and Conway and Rose each added 14.

“The girls played well; it was a good game for them to get their confidence back,” Strand said, citing previous losses to Tucumcari and Santa Rosa.

Grady fell to 4-5.

Springer 43, San Jon 23

Springer outscored an ailing San Jon girls basketball team 28-8 in the second and third quarters to fuel a 43-23 victory Saturday.

San Jon coach Jaree Elliott said her team wasn’t its healthiest, with six of eight players slowed by a non-COVID congestion illness.

“It showed on the floor,” she said. “A lot of silly turnovers and, again, our free throw percentage (9-of-20) is something that hurt us.”

She said three starters also were sidelined a portion of the game due to foul trouble.

“However, Springer is very fast, and one focus was to make sure they didn’t get us in fastbreaks, and my girls, as sick as they were, kept them from doing that.”

Karlee Elliott and Sarah Archuleta each led the Lady Coyotes (4-4) with six points.

Springer improved to 4-6.

San Jon 53, Des Moines 27

The Lady Coyotes stormed to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and 33-14 at halftime en route to a 53-37 victory Thursday at Des Moines.

“We got a big jump in the first half due to executing our press well,” coach Elliott said.

Karlee Elliott led San Jon with 15 points, and Chantzee Elliott added 14.

Des Moines fell to 2-7.

Texline 44, San Jon 40

San Jon suffered a close road loss Jan. 4 to Texline at Adrian, Texas.

Karlee Elliott led San Jon with 14 points, and Chantzee Elliott and McEwen each added nine points.

“We had a lot of unforced errors down the stretch in the fourth quarter that hurt us,” coach Elliott said. “And free throws seem to continue to plague us no matter the practice we put in.”

San Jon went just 7-for-16 from the free-throw line.

Texline improved to 3-3.
