1972: “A substitute for a groundhog? Sorry about that, but we tried to find a groundhog with no avail. Shown above is ‘Pepe’ — a Pekepoo dog — who is celebrating his fifth birthday today and who volunteered against his wishes to try to see his shadow. Once outside he couldn’t have cared less. In case you are still interested, the sun was out if that means we are supposed to have six more weeks of cold weather. If you desire later information then you will have to wait for news from the town in Pennsylvania that we can’t spell much less pronounce. Back there the whole town turns out and makes a ritual of looking for a groundhog to find out the weather forecast for the next six weeks.”

• The Tucumcari / Quay County Chamber of Commerce set dates for the annual Pinata Festival of Sept. 5-10, but would consult with the fair board to ensure there are no conflicts with that event.

• The Safeway grocery in Tucumcari was advertising whole fryers for 29 cents a pound, sliced bacon for 87 cents a pound, boneless shoulder beef roast for $1.09 a pound and ground beef for 59 cents a pound.

• The Odeon Theatre in Tucumcari was screening a double-feature of John Wayne movies — “Chisum” and “The Green Berets.”
