Arizona woman dies in traffic accident

An Arizona woman died Friday in a traffic accident on U.S. 54 southwest of Logan.

New Mexico State Police were called about 8 p.m. Friday to investigate the crash between a tractor-trailer and a U-Haul box van on U.S. 54 near milepost 321.

State police stated in a news release the tractor-trailer traveling west on U.S. 54 tried to pass another commercial motor vehicle and struck the eastbound U-Haul van.

Stephanie Chasar, 53, of Chandler, Arizona, who was the van’s driver, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A 26-year-old passenger in the U-Haul suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to a hospital.

The 30-year-old driver of the truck was not injured. New Mexico State Police, noting he had not been charged, did not identify him.

Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, and seatbelts appear to have been worn properly. The crash remains under investigation.
