State OKs first cannabis license in Tucumcari

A couple from Texas recently was granted the first cannabis business license in Tucumcari.

According to the New Mexico Cannabis Control Division website, Jill and Kenneth Gregory of Whitesboro, Texas, were granted a retail cannabis license on Feb. 16 for Route 66 Buds LLC at 1808 S. First St. in Tucumcari.

That is the old Comcast building they are leasing from Tucumcari resident Steve Whittington, Jill Gregory said last week in a phone interview.

The Quay County Assessor’s Office reports the building is owned by Whittco Inc., based in Clovis. According to business data from the New Mexico Secretary of State, Stephen Whittington as the registered agent for Whittco Inc.

Gregory said they are hopeful they can open the cannabis shop by the time the state anticipates allowing the sale of legal recreational marijuana and its related products by April 1. She said the only renovations the 3,000-square-foot building will require is the erection of one interior wall and the removal of another.

Gregory said she and her husband had been looking at setting up a cannabis business in Tucumcari since September. She said they were driving through Clayton when they found out about the state’s legalization of marijuana.

She said they considered a cannabis business in Clayton, but “Tucumcari seemed like a much better option.”

Gregory said they moved from Whitesboro, north of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, to Tucumcari last weekend.

“We’re really thrilled and really excited,” she said. “We’re excited to be part of the community and being part of this.”

According to an online license search of the state’s Cannabis Control Division, 21 other cannabis license applications from Tucumcari have been filed. Most are in draft form, and two were under review.
