Foxes stop Longhorns' run in district tourney

Fort Sumner-House ended the Logan boys basketball team’s run in the district tournament with a resounding 75-39 victory Thursday in the semifinals.

The Foxes, which improved to 16-4, ended Logan’s season with a 10-18 record.

Logan defeated Grady and upset Melrose in the District 6 tournament to set up the clash with host Fort Sumner.

Brock Burns led the Longhorns with 10 points.

“We never were able to get anything going offensively,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said, “and they came out and really shot it well. Was a tough overall night for us.”

Fort Sumner-House went on to down top-seeded Clovis Christian 67-48 in the tournament final Saturday.

Logan did not qualify for the Class 1A tournament. A young Longhorns squad graduates only one senior — Zack Byrd — so the future for the team appears bright.

“We had a lot of growth this year,” Griffiths said. “The guys continuously worked and learned what they needed to do to get better. It paid off towards the end with several big wins. I expect big things in the future.”

Logan 55, Melrose 52

Logan outscored host Melrose 19-9 in the fourth quarter to seal a 55-52 victory in the second round of the district tournament on Feb. 22.

Like during its previous win against Grady, Griffiths said defense was the key to his team’s win against the Buffaloes.

“Against Melrose, we probably played our best defensive game of the year,” he said. “We had key stops in some big situations.”

Burns scored 19 points to lead the Longhorns, and Christian Kotara and Kaeden Stoner each scored 13.

Melrose fell to 18-8 overall.

Logan 79, Grady 61

The Longhorns stormed to a 41-25 lead by intermission and coasted to a 79-61 victory over host Grady during the first round of the district tournament on Feb. 21.

“We came out with a lot of intensity and were able to get an early lead,” Griffiths said. “We did a much better job slowing down their main player.”

Kotara scored 18 points to lead Logan, and teammates Burns and Stoner added 15 each.

Grady finished the season at 7-19.

Melrose 80, San Jon 26

Melrose ended San Jon’s season with an 80-26 victory over the visiting Coyotes during the first round Feb. 21 of the district tournament.

Junior Matthew Martinez tallied 12 points for San Jon (1-18), which went winless during their district schedule.

The Coyotes are graduating no seniors on its team. Its varsity roster includes four eighth-graders, one freshman, one sophomore and two juniors.

Melrose (18-7) did not play any of its starters. Asher Lunsford led the Buffaloes with 14 points.
