Tucumcari teams travel to playoff games; Logan girls play at home

The Tucumcari boys and girls basketball teams will travel for their first-round games in the Class 3A tournament this week, while the high-seeded Logan girls will host their Class 1A tourney opener at home.

The New Mexico Activities Association announced the postseason pairings on Sunday afternoon. Seeds were bared on win-loss record, district record, MaxPreps.com ratings, victories versus district champions, member-school input and head-to-head competition.

The Tucumcari boys (8-16), which won its district tournament to earn a berth, was the 16th-seeded team in the Class 3A tournament and will travel to top-seeded Socorro (20-5) at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Tucumcari coach John Span anticipated Saturday his team would be the lowest seed in the tourney, and his prognostication proved true.

“We’ll be at the bottom, I think, but that’s OK. We’re in the tournament. Once we get there, anything can happen,” he said.

The winner of that same will face the winner of the Crownpoint (21-7) vs. Santa Fe Prep (14-11) battle in next week’s quarterfinals.

The Tucumcari girls team (13-10) earned a 12th seed and will play at fifth-seeded Crownpoint (21-7) at 6 p.m. Friday.

If the Lady Rattlers advance, they would play the winner of the battle between Navajo Prep (20-6) and St. Michael’s (10-18) in next week’s quarterfinals.

Robertson (24-1) is the top seed in the Class 3A girls bracket.

The Logan girls team (21-6) earned a third seed in the Class 1A tournament and will host Evangel Christian/Oak Grove (21-5) at 5 p.m. Friday.

If the Lady Longhorns advance, they would face the winner of the matchup between sixth-seeded Roy/Mosquero (22-5) and 11th-seed Cliff (15-8) in next week’s quarterfinals.

Animas (19-2) was seeded first in the Class 1A girls bracket, with Fort Sumner-House (17-4) seeded second.

The quarterfinals for girls basketball teams will be Tuesday, March 8. The quarterfinals for boys teams will be Wednesday, March 9.

The Class 1A girls semifinals will be Friday, March 11, at Bernalillo High School. The Class 3A girls semifinals will be Thursday, March 10, at The Pit in Albuquerque. The Class 3A boys semifinals will be Friday, March 11, at the Rio Rancho Events Center.

All championship games will be at The Pit. The Class 1A girls will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 12. The Class 3A girls title game will be at 4 p.m. Friday, March 11. The Class 3A boys title game will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 12.
