1972: Fourteen striking workers at the Tucumcari Power Plant went back to work following a two-day walkout after the Power Board and city commissioners heard their complaints. Several workers complained the plant’s new superintendent had split work shifts and that workers began painting the plant when they should have been doing maintenance on engines to prepare for the coming summer months. The superintendent denied reports he would lay off the plant’s older workers but admitted he was training younger employees so they could take over when they retire.

• Pat Murphy, director of the new film “Squares,” came to Tucumcari on a promotional trip for the movie. Starring Andres Prine and Gilmer McCormick, “Squares” was shot and produced in New Mexico. The film was scheduled to premiere later this month in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. “Squares” is a love story involving a down-on-his-luck rodeo star and a rich, preppie-type girl.

• Hamlett’s Men’s Wear at 113 E. Main St. in Tucumcari advertised a “great selection” of Louis Goldsmith double-knit suits, Glen Oak slacks and trendy sportswear.
