The Logan softball team earned its first victory of 2022 with a resounding 17-6 win last week over Clayton in the season finale.
It appeared the Lady Longhorns, who are rebuilding their program after a two-year hiatus, might go winless after losing their first 20 games of the year and falling 15-11 in the first game of their season-ending doubleheader against the Yellowjackets on May 3.
Instead, Logan notched a relatively easy win in the nightcap.
“The girls were very, very excited with the win,” Logan coach Dustin Robertson said. “I’m proud of their hard work and perseverance throughout the season.”
Lizzy Horner was the winning pitcher for the Lady Longhorns.
“She did a great job, threw strikes, and the defense had her back,” Robertson said, adding that Horner walked twice at the plate and scored twice.
Marilyn Cortez Moreno went 3-for-3 for the Lady Longhorns, with a triple, four runs scored and three RBI. Kara Bibbs went 2-for-2 with two runs driven in.
Clayton fell to 5-14 overall.
Logan, which took two years off from softball due to COVID-19 and a lack of players, figures to be much improved next season. The Lady Longhorns will lose four seniors, and most of their starters were sophomores, freshmen or eighth-graders. The squad has no juniors.
“I’ll definitely never forget this season or this group of girls,” Robertson said.
