30 coronavirus cases reported in county

Quay County for the fourth straight week saw elevated case numbers of COVID-19, with 30 confirmed by the state last week.

That compares to the 34 cases reported during the previous week. It was the fourth consecutive week more than 25 cases were reported in the county.

The COVID Act Now website on Friday stated Quay County remained at a “high” level of community risk, along with the neighboring counties of Curry, Roosevelt and De Baca. San Miguel County’s risk was at a moderate level, and Guadalupe, Harding and Union counties were listed as low risk.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the county since the pandemic began in spring 2020 rose to 2,225.

The breakdown of total COVID-19 cases by ZIP code in Quay County through Friday was 1,717 in Tucumcari, 309 in Logan, 104 in San Jon, 38 in House, 22 in McAlister, 18 in Bard and 15 in Nara Visa.

The new cases last week were reported in the ZIP codes of Tucumcari, Logan, San Jon and House.

No confirmed COVID-19 deaths in Quay County were reported last week, keeping the death toll from the virus rose to 64 since the pandemic began more than two years ago. More than 50 coronavirus deaths have occurred in the county in a little more than a year.

The state’s Environment Department reported these rapid responses for COVID-19 employer infections in Quay County:

• Gold Star Mailing Service, Tucumcari, one case reported July 21;

• Quality Lube and Tire, Tucumcari, four cases reported July 25;

• Ute Lake State Park, Logan, one case reported July 25;

• EPCAA Early Head Start, Tucumcari, one case reported July 26;

• Quay County Family Health Center, Tucumcari, one case reported July 28.

A total of 1,048 new cases of coronavirus were reported Friday in New Mexico. That raised the total since the pandemic began to more than 591,000.

New Mexico’s seven-day daily case rate declined slightly to 948 by Friday. The rate was 974 the previous week.

A total of 209 people were hospitalized in New Mexico with the disease Friday, an increase of 17 from the previous week. Hospitalizations have been far fewer during the outbreak of the latest variant of the disease.

A total of 48 COVID-19 deaths were reported in the state Friday, raising the pandemic’s overall total to 8,246.

In the Amarillo metro region, the total number of active cases finally started to show a slowdown after weeks of steep increases. That total rose from 2,389 to 2,420 in one week.

The disease has killed 1,290 people in the Amarillo metro since the pandemic began, including four last week.

In the U.S., more than 91.3 million COVID-19 cases have been confirmed since the pandemic began, with nearly 1.03 million deaths, through Saturday.

The state Department of Health also recommends COVID-19 drugs for those who have contracted the disease in its early stages and are at high risk for serious illness. These drugs are highly effective at preventing hospitalization and death but must be taken within days of the first symptom.
