1972: Tucumcari native Donald Greer, 19, died in an automobile accident near El Paso, Texas, on Interstate 10. Three other people — many of them about to enroll at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces — were injured in the car when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it tumbled down a steep slope. Services for Greer will be Friday at Dunn Funeral Chapel in Tucumcari.

— Thomas Makley Grissom, 47, of Nara Visa was bound over in district court on a murder charge during a preliminary hearing. Grissom pleaded not guilty and was released on $10,000 bond. He was accused of fatally shooting his son Preston, 18, with a shotgun near Nara Visa.

— Shirley Nash, 20, of Tucumcari was chosen as the Quay County Fair Queen and will represent the region at the New Mexico State Fair in September. Terri Norred, 17, of Tucumcari was runner-up. Contestants were judged on 40% personality and 60% horsemanship.
