New Mexico State Police last week identified a Clovis man as the second person killed in a car-train accident that occurred on Nov. 4 between Tucumcari and Logan.
Abraham Riquiac-Gonzalez, 30, of Clovis, was the driver of the Toyota Camry car that was struck by a Union Pacific train at a County Road Ad crossing, just off U.S. 54, according to an email Friday from a state police public information officer.
State police three days after the accident identified Pedro Jimon, 38, also of Clovis, as a passenger in the car.
The Camry was going north over the railroad tracks as the train struck it. The two men were pronounced dead at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
State police said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, and seatbelts appeared to have been properly used.
A Union Pacific assistant engineer told a state police officer at the scene the engineer had sounded the train’s horn, but the car did not slow. He estimated the southbound train was going about 60 mph at the time.
The crossing contains no crossing gates or warning lights, but the railroad-crossing signs have stop signs affixed to them.
The engineer and assistant engineer were not injured.
