Lady Longhorns fall to Vixens in district semifinal

The Logan girls basketball team fell to second-seeded Fort Sumner 53-46 in the semifinal of the District A-6 Tournament on Wednesday.

The Vixens stormed to a 10-0 lead early and never trailed, though the Lady Longhorns tightened it to a one-point game early in the second half.

Lady Longhorns coach Dustin Robertson said his team didn’t lose due to a lack of effort.

“Energy, talking and effort were all great again,” he said. “We just didn’t hit the shots like we have the previous few games. No doubt Fort Sumner’s defense had a little something to do with that.

“It was a dogfight, and my girls never quit.”

Liz Horner and Desta Rose each scored 17 points to lead third-seeded Logan, which fell to 17-11.

Fort Sumner improved to 16-9.

The Vixens fell in the district tourney title game 49-45 to top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Melrose (24-1).

Logan 67, Grady 39

The Lady Longhorns used a balanced scoring attack against Grady in a 69-39 victory in the quarterfinal of the district tournament last Monday.

Rose, Hailee Robertson and Camryn Cantrell each scored 12 points to lead Logan. Marilyn Moreno added eight points.

“We shot really well against Grady,” coach Robertson said. “We executed the offense and took the open shot. Defensively, we talked really well, had great energy and enthusiasm. It all translated to a great all-around game.”

Grady fell to 10-13.
