Cannon AFB to host first airshow since 2018

Cannon AFB will host its first airshow since 2018 next month.

The airshow, "Wings Over Cannon," is scheduled for April 22. Gates will open at 9 a.m. The event is free.

Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs in bags, sunscreen, earplugs, brimmed hats, sunglasses, cameras, small purses, umbrellas, strollers and cellphones. All vehicles entering the base are subject to search.

Prohibited at the show will be drones, coolers, backpacks, weapons, pets, canopies or tents, outside food or drinks, large purses or totes, wagons, glass (except for baby food), drugs or drug paraphernalia.

Parking will be available on the ramp of the airfield. Any cars left there after 5 p.m. will be towed.

Headlining the show will be the Air Combat Command's A-10C Thunderbolt II Demonstration Team. The team, stationed out of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, travels to airshows around the country to show the unique combat capabilities of the A-10 Thunderbolt, a close air support aircraft that provides invaluable protection to troops on the ground.

Cannon's own Air Commandos will highlight their capabilities during an exercise consisting of the AC-130J Ghostrider, MC-130J Commando II, U-28A Draco, CV-22 Osprey, and Special Tactics Airmen. Spectators can also see the MQ-9 Reaper in flight.

Visitors will see a flyover of a B-1B Lancer out of Dyess Air Force Base, a performance by the U.S. Air Force Academy Aerobatic Glider Demonstration Team and a flyover of a KC-135 Stratotanker from March Air Force Base.

Additionally, there will be a various assortment of modern and historic aircraft and equipment static displays.

The airshow also will feature an entire hangar dedicated to STEM education featuring several displays and interactive activities, that will appeal to people of all ages.

"We are extremely happy to be able to open our gates to the community," said Col. Terence Taylor, 27th Special Operations Wing commander. "Air shows give us an opportunity to engage, educate and inspire attendees."
