4-H hunting team finishes runner-up in state

Quay County 4-H teams finished second in hunting and fourth in archery at the New Mexico Shooting Sports Championship in Raton earlier this month.

The event hosted 400 youths from across the state on May 4-6 in small bore rifle, archery, air rifle, air pistol, shotgun, hunting, muzzleloader and small-bore pistol shooting disciplines.

The Quay County hunting team of Payton Oliver, Ashton Smith, Aubrey Oliver and Paxton Smith finished second overall, with Payton Oliver being the No. 2 high individual during the competition and was the top shooter in New Mexico in the muzzleloader competition.

Dona Ana County won the hunting competition and will go to nationals.

Quay County's archery team of Antonio Gonzales, Charmaynn Hall, Brandon Gonzales and Logan Lafferty finished fourth overall against 26 teams.

The county's pistol team of Kirksey Smith, Paxton Smith and Lanie Hammer finished sixth overall at state.

The local air rifle team of MiKayla Klinger, Kirksey Smith and Carter Smith finished seventh.

Quay County also sent a second archery team that competed: Aimee Ross, Kaira Black, Emma Elebario and Ashton Smith.
