    Thomas Garcia, Staff writer|Jul 4, 2018

The interest of three groups expressing interest of bringing a racino to the Clovis, Curry County area is not swaying or lessening the confidence of the Tucumcari, Quay County’s bid for the sixth and final license, said Warren Frost. “It doesn’t matter if there are 10 entities that want to apply, express interest in bringing a racino to Clovis,” Frost said. “We have the best location for the racino; Tucumcari is where the highest revenue stream can be generated.” Frost a spokesman for a group looking to bring a racino to Tucumcari, said with l...

  • Meeting protocol discussed

    Steve Hansen, Correspondent|Jul 4, 2018

The issue of who’s third in line to conduct a meeting became an issue before the Tucumcari City Commission Thursday. Mayor Ruth Ann Litchfield, in her duties as mayor, conducts commission meetings. In her absence, it becomes Mayor Pro Tem Robert Lumpkin’s duty. If neither could attend a meeting, Litchfield suggested that District 5 Commissioner Todd Duplantis be appointed to attend such meetings. However, District 1 Commissioner Ralph Moya objected, saying he had not been consulted on the idea. Moya suggested that in such cases, the rem...

  • Pot changes could do some bipartisan good

    The Dallas Morning News|Jul 4, 2018

The recently released list of Texas Republicans’ biggest legislative priorities was largely expected — except for that surprising bit about weed. Decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana and improving medical marijuana guidelines finally made it to the state GOP’s platform, and we hope legislators jump to action in January. Marijuana-related legislation is more popular among Texans than you might expect. A 2017 poll found that only 17 percent of Texans were still against legalization in any form, with medical use still considered the most acc...

  • Dems should play hand they're dealt

    Steve Hansen, Columnist|Jul 4, 2018

OK. President Donald Trump gets another U.S. Supreme Court nominee. Guess what? He or she will be a conservative. The majorities vary between the U.S. House of Representative and the U.S. Senate, but they are Republican in both cases. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D- N.Y.) is saying we should put off an appointment until after the November election. Why? Because that's what they did to President Barack Obama when he tried to appoint a justice after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. Sorry, Chuck, it won't work. This time the president and majorities...

  • Christians should defend freedom

    Gordan Runyan, Religion columnist|Jul 4, 2018

1 Corinthians 7:23 says, “You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants [or, slaves] of men.” The first half refers to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, where the price He paid was His life, offered voluntarily on the rough-hewn wood of a Roman cross, to buy sinners out of their bondage to things like sin, death, and Hell. The concept of rescuing them by purchasing them goes back to provisions made in the Old Testament law, by which a family member could “buy back” what his relative had...
