Tucumcari High School students spent Tuesday morning cleaning up at sites around Tucumcari and earning some community service credit as they observed Earth Day, according to Christina Fleming, a teacher who coordinated the day’s activities for the high school.

Junior students cleaned up trash and debris at Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery, hauling away 70 yard trash bags full of disposable material, Fleming said, while seniors traveled to the New Mexico State University Agricultural Experiment Station to clean up trash.

Freshman and sophomore students cleaned up around the grounds of Tucumcari High School, Fleming said.

In the afternoon, Fleming said, students gathered in the high school auditorium to hear presentations about water safety. Community service credit can sometimes be hard to find, Fleming said, and it is becoming an increasingly important part of college entrance requirements.
