Police charge Texas woman with stabbing that left local man hospitalized

Tucumcari police arrested a woman from Fort Worth, Texas, on charges of stabbing a Tucumcari man in the neck at his residence on the 1300 block of East Harmon Avenue, said Deputy Police Chief Pete Rivera.

Rivera said on April 30, Amanda Nunez, 35, was charged with felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.

Rivera said at 11:26 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call reporting a man had been stabbed. Rivera said upon their arrival, officers located the victim, later identified at Danny McKinney, 54, of Tucumcari, with what appeared to be a stab wound to the neck area.

Rivera said McKinney told officers that he had been stabbed by Nunez and she had left the area in a 1992 Toyota car that she had taken from the scene. He said McKinney was transported to Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital for treatment while officers began searching for Nunez.

Rivera said the officers were assisted in their search by the Quay County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police. He said at noon, a state police officer located the reported vehicle on Interstate 40 near Mile Marker 335, east of Tucumcari.

Rivera said Nunez was taken into custody by state police and transported to the the Tucumcari Police Department. He said Nunez was processed and interviewed while a search warrant was obtained for the residence and the vehicle.

Rivera said after the search and interview, Nunez was charged and transported to the Quay County Detention Center.

Nunez remains in jail under a $20,000 cash-only bond.
