• First Lt. George M. York, son of Mr. and Mrs. David York of Tucumcari, was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters and the Soldier’s Medal for his distinguished heroism on Nov. 21, 1969. York assisted in disarming a soldier that opened fire with an M-16 rifle trying to injure his fellow soldiers. York was a member of the Air Force’s 3rd Brigade, 1st Air Cavalry Division.

• The Tucumcari Police Department started a fundraiser for fellow officer Sgt. Marvin Hennig. Hennig was fighting an illness and had used up all of his sick leave and members of the department started to collect money to help their fellow officer with expenses.

• New Mexico State Police officer Dwain Johnston of Tucumcari was named Officer of the Year for the state of New Mexico.

• Three Tucumcari students Jolene Broce, Karren Hennig and Cindy Coughenour attended the New Mexico Committee on Children and Youth held in Santa Fe.
