Tucumcari police assist at high school

Tucumcari police officers and Quay County sheriff’s deputies were called Tuesday morning to Tucumcari High School to assist in a situation involving a juvenile.

Sheriff Russell Shafer said the school was not placed on lockdown after the call was received at 10:28 a.m.

“Staff at the high school had the situation contained to one room and one student,” Shafer said. “At no time was there any immediate danger to other students.”

Shafer and school officials didn’t elaborate on what prompted the call for assistance. A call log from the Tucumcari Quay Regional Emergency Communications Center shows city and county officers responded to a call about a suicidal person at that location and time.

Shafer said one student was taken to Trigg Memorial Hospital in Tucumcari for evaluation.
