Logan finishes third at tourney

The Logan girls basketball team finished third at the Dora Tournament by defeating area rival Grady/San Jon/House 60-28 on Saturday night.

Harlie Roach led the Lady Longhorns (3-1) with 15 points, while teammate Karli Webb added 10.

“We played better,” Logan coach Glynna Strand, referring to a 48-23 drubbing her team suffered the previous night to state-ranked Tatum. “We got everyone some experience (Saturday); now it's time to do some work before Clayton.”

The Lady Bronchos fell to 1-4 overall.

Tatum defeated Pine Hill 46-38 on Saturday to win the tournament.

Tatum 48, Logan 23

The state-ranked Tatum Coyotes lived up to their billing Friday, winning 48-23 over Logan during the semifinals of the Dora Tournament.

Logan coach Strand was succinct in her appraisal of her squad: “We didn't come ready to play.”

Webb and Roach each scored six points to lead the Lady Longhorns. Tatum was ranked No. 2 in Class A by MaxPreps.com before the game.

Pine Hill 55, Grady/San Jon/House 22

The Lady Bronchos found themselves overwhelmed during the semifinals Friday of the Dora Tournament, losing 55-22 to state-ranked Pine Hill.

Grady/San Jon/House trailed 18-4 in the first quarter and 27-10 at halftime. Pine Hill was ranked No. 1 in Class A by MaxPreps.com before the game.

“Pine Hill is quick and they're a good team, but it was more our own mistakes,” Bronchos coach Rebecca Burns said. “We made silly turnovers the entire game and didn't transition quickly enough on defense.”

Morgan Becerra led the Lady Bronchos with six points.

Logan 62, Elida 36 The Lady Longhorns seized control early while coasting to a 62-36 victory Thursday over Elida in the Dora Tournament. Logan (2-0) jumped out to a 31-14 lead in the first quarter and led 43-23 at halftime. “We pressed some in the first quarter,” Strand said. “We got the lead and then was able to play everyone.” Webb led the Lady Longhorns with 26 points, and Roach added 24. Logan played without two starters because of injuries.

Elida fell to (1-2) overall.

Grady/San Jon/House 33, Hagerman 30

The Lady Bronchos notched their first win of the year with a come-from-behind 33-30 victory Thursday over Hagerman during the Dora Tournament.

Grady/San Jon/House trailed 16-9 early but outscored the Bobcats 13-6 in the final quarter to secure the win.

Burns said the key to the game was going to a man-to-man defense in the fourth quarter.

“It didn't necessarily produce turnovers, but it put the pressure on a little and sped up the game,” she said. “We did a much better job rebounding the last few minutes, as well.”

Isabelle Martinez led Grady/San Jon/House with 10 points. Becerra and Timia Northcutt each scored six.

Hagerman fell to 0-2 overall.

Gateway Christian 46, Grady/San Jon/House 42

The Lady Bronchos held an 11-point lead at intermission but saw it dwindle away in the second half Dec. 4 during a 46-42 loss to Gateway Christian at Grady.

Grady/San Jon/House led 28-17 at the half but saw it evaporate in the third quarter when the Lady Warriors went on 15-4 run. Gateway Christian then played well enough in the final period to gain the edge in a close win.

“We started out real strong and shot well in the first half,” Burns said. “Our defense did a great job containing their shooters. We struggled to score in the third, and their shooters got hot in the second half.”

Gateway Christian improved to 2-0 overall.

Teryn Foote led the Lady Bronchos with 15 points, and Divinity Archuleta scored nine.
