Melrose defeats Lady Longhorns

The Logan girls basketball team fell 40-32 in the title game Friday of the Class 1A, District 6 tournament at host Melrose.

The Lady Longhorns fell to 22-6 overall, led by Harlie Roach's 11 points. Four of Logan's six losses this year were to the Lady Buffaloes.

Logan is seeded third in the Class 1A state tournament and will host No. 14-seed Hondo Valley (17-10) on Friday. The winner of that game plays the winner of the Quernado-Des Moines matchup on March 13 at Bernalillo.

Melrose improved to 21-6 overall and captured the No. 1 seed in the Class 1A state tournament. Tatum (24-4) is seeded second.

The March 14 semifinals and March 16 championship will be at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.

Logan 42, Fort Sumner 32

The Lady Longhorns used a fourth-quarter surge to secure a 42-32 victory over Fort Sumner in the semifinals Wednesday of their district tournament.

Leading just 29-25 in after the third quarter, Logan outscored the Vixens 13-7 the rest of the way.

Roach led Logan with 13 points, and Makenna Brewer added nine.

The Lady Longhorns improved to 22-5 overall.

Fort Sumner fell to 13-13 overall.

Fort Sumner 50, Grady 27

The Vixens took a 19-5 lead in the first quarter and never were threatened by Grady/San Jon/House during a second-round district-tournament game at Fort Sumner on Feb. 26.

Teryn Foote led Grady with eight points, while Kristin Grau and Isabelle Martinez added six.

The Lady Bronchos fell to 5-21 overall.

“I think this team worked incredibly hard all season, and we grew so much from the beginning of the season to now,” Lady Bronchos coach Rebecca Burns said. “Class 1A is tough this year, and these young ones had a lot of learning to do throughout the course of the season. Overall, it’s not the season we wanted., but I think we definitely achieved some of our goals as a team.”

Grady 46, Clovis Christian 43

Grady took a double-digit lead in the first quarter and hung on to defeat Clovis Christian 46-43 in a first-round district tournament game at Grady on Feb. 25.

Foote scored 18 points to lead the Lady Bronchos.

The Eagles fell to 5-15 overall.
