Lady Longhorns move on

The Logan girls basketball team easily advanced to the Class 1A quarterfinals with a 67-27 victory Friday over Hondo Valley at Logan High School.

No. 3-seed Logan (23-6) was scheduled to play No. 6-seed Quernado (21-8) at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bernalillo High School. Quernado defeated Des Moines 77-64 in its first-round game.

The winner of that game will play the winner of Tatum-Animus at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho. The championship will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Dreamstyle Arena in Albuquerque.

On Friday, the Lady Longhorns led 17-5 in the first quarter and 42-16 at halftime. Logan burned the Hondo Valley, which ended its season at 17-11, with eight 3-point shots.

“We played well,” Logan coach Glynna Strand said. “They didn’t handle pressure well. We pressed, and they hard a hard time with that.”

Jordan Hines led the Lady Longhorns with 19 points, while teammate Harlie Roach added 13 and Kassie Foote 10.

“Jordan, this is the first game I felt like she’s back,” Strand said. “She’s struggled all year with injuries. She had four threes, and she was looking good.”

Blanca Villanueva and Nina Herrera each led the Eagles with eight points.
