Tucumcari boys finish third

The Tucumcari boys track team finished third Friday at the seven-team Santa Rosa Invitational in the final tune-up event before Friday's district meet.

The Rattlers finished with 84 points, behind Estancia's 101 1/2 and host Santa Rosa's 158.

Tucumcari senior Seth Martinez, a two-time state champion in the hurdles, easily won the 110-meter hurdles race in a time of 16.74 and the 300-meter hurdles in 41.04.

Casey Carter also won the 100-meter dash (11.53). Tucumcari's 1,600-meter relay team of Martinez, Josh Chavez, Robbie Hartmann and Gerardo Villa-Vargas took first place in 3:30.04.

The Tucumcari girls team finished fourth with 80 points. Prevailing at the meet was Estancia with 108 points, and Santa Rosa finished runner-up with 95 1/2. Clayton was third with 86 1/2.

For the Lady Rattlers, Secilee Skinner won both the shot put (33-3) and discus (93-5). Aliyah Herrera also won the triple jump in 31-4.

Tucumcari will compete in the Class 3A-District 4 meet at 3 p.m. Friday at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell. The top two finishers, or those who meet state-qualifying times or distances, qualify for the state meet in Albuquerque on May 10-11.

Logan girls win Buffalo Relays

The Logan girls track team dominated the 18-team Buffalo Relays track meet at Melrose on Thursday, nearly doubling the runner-up in terms of points.

In boys competition, Logan finished third and Tucumcari fourth at the event.

It was the last warm-up before the Class 1A-District 6 track meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, which Logan hosts. The top two finishers, or those that meet state-qualifying times or distances, qualify for the state meet in Albuquerque on May 10-11.

The Lady Longhorns finished with 102 points, while runner-up Fort Sumner totaled 57. Tucumcari was fifth with 31 points. San Jon totaled 10 points, in 12th place.

First-place winners for Logan were Cassidy Cordova in the 100-meter dash (13.24 seconds) and long jump (15 feet, 5 inches), Jodi Vance in the pole vault (6-6), Harlie Roach in the discus (102-7 1/2), plus Logan's teams in the 400 relay (0:53.94), 800 relay (1:52.84),

For Tucumcari, Erin Encinias won the 3,200-meter run (14:33.28).

For San Jon, Teryn Foote won the 400-meter dash in 1:07.40 and javelin throw (89-3 1/2).

In boys competition, Logan finished third with 47 points and Tucumcari fourth with 43 1/2. Fort Sumner won the meet with 77 1/2 points, with Hagerman runner-up with 71. San Jon finished eighth with 23 points. House totaled five points and Grady three.

First-place winners for Logan were Dyson Day in the 100-meter dash (0:11.34), Jantzen Paris in the 400-meter dash (52.94), Steven Coronado in the pole vault (14-0), plus the 400 relay team (45.94).

Individual winners for Tucumcari were Martinez in the 110-meter hurdles (15.64) and 300-meter hurdles (40.54), plus the 1,600-meter relay team (3:32.74).

For San Jon, Dustin Bryant won the high jump (5-10) and long jump (19-6 1/2).
