Rifle team eligible for nationals

A Quay County 4-H rifle shooting team is eligible to participate in national shooting competition after scoring third overall in state competition, according to New Mexico 4-H sources.
The Quay 4-H pistol team also scored third overall in state competition, records show.
Gares Lopez, a member of that team scored the second-highest overall score among all participants in both rifle and pistol shooting, records show.
The teams competed with 4-Hers from other New Mexico counties May 3-5 at the National Rifle Association’s Whittington Center near Raton.
The national competition will be in the last week of June in Grand Island Nebraska, according to Ralph Lopez, coach of the pistol team.
“The team is practicing and raising money for the trip now,” he said.
Rifle team members included Gares Lopez, Kaleb Hayes, Kindal Smith and Garrett Bollinger.
Pistol team members were Lopez, Rilee Nials and Jenna Lopez.
In overall rifle competition, Gares Lopez scored 738.2 points, coming in second behind Amoret McCartney of San Juan County, who scored 785.9 points.
In pistol competition, Lopez scored 466 to secure second place behind Mary Howell of Dona Ana County, who scored 501 points.
Quay County 4H small-bore .22 rifle shooters won third place with 2,052.5 points. The winners, San Juan County 4-H, scored 2,165.8 points and the second-place Dona Ana County team scored 2,103.5 points.
The Quay County pistoleers scored 1,042 points in their third-place showing, behind Dona Ana County’s team, which scored 1,098 points to win, and second-place Chaves County with 1,055 points.
