Area girls compete in all-star games

Two senior girls from Tucumcari and one from Logan competed over the weekend during the North vs. South basketball all-star games in the Albuquerque area.

Kalani French and Aliyah Herrera of Tucumcari and Harlie Roach of Logan were part of the Northeast girls small-school team. Penasco’s Gilbert Mascarenas coached the team.

The Northeast girls squad had a tough time over the weekend, with an 87-65 loss over the Southeast team on Friday and a 79-71 loss to the Northwest squad on Saturday.

Tucumcari coach Gary Hittson said he watched both games.

“I thought they played well considering they only had three practices with the team,” he said of his former players. “They both had some good moments in the games. Both girls played some good defense, and both had moments on offense. They represented Tucumcari Lady Rattler basketball well this past weekend.”

The Southeast girls ended up securing bragging rights with a 68-55 victory over Southwest in the title game on Saturday.

Also, Logan senior Dyson Day was supposed to play for the Northeast small-school boys all-star team during the weekend. However, Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said Day didn’t make the trip because of a bothersome knee.

Pecos coach Ira Harge Jr. coached the Northeast.

The Northeast boys lost their opener Friday 114-85 to the Southeast but bounced back with a 97-85 win over Southeast on Saturday.

The Southeast all-star team secured bragging rights with a 103-81 win over Northeast in the title game on Saturday.
