Students earn speech awards

Four House Elementary School students recently earned awards and cash prizes in speech contests by the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association and the Southwest Quay Soil and Water Conservation District.

Students delivered original speeches of two to three minutes on the cattle group's theme, "Beef Production: How Does It Contribute to Healthy Soils?"

Speeches were judged on originality, innovation and creativity and visual aesthetics.

Jalee Snipes of House won first prize in the youth division, earning $500 and an invitation to the from the cattle group's joint stockmen's convention this month and the mid-year meeting in June.

Maddie Kenyon was second, winning $300. Clayton Boyd finished third and took home $200. All are fifth-graders.

Elizabeth Downey, a third-grade student at House, won $100 for her winning speech to the conservation district. Her speech was on the same subject and judged by the same criteria.
