1970: A fire was reported in a room of the Flying M Ranch Motel at 1119 E. Gaynell (aka Route 66). According to owner O.R. Mobley, he had been painting one of the motel’s rooms. One of the covers used to protect furniture apparently was too close to a heater, igniting it. The blaze was confined to the one room, and damage was estimated at $250.

• Tucumcari’s junior-high faculty were preparing for a charity basketball game at Rattler Gym against a team of the Evening Lions and Leos clubs. Money raised from the game would go to junior-high athletic programs.

• The Logan, San Jon, House and Grady basketball teams were preparing for the EPAC Tournament at Portales Gym. Other teams in the tournament were Floyd, Dora, Texico, Causey, Elida, Tatum and Melrose. San Jon was ranked eighth in the latest Class AA poll.

• The Odeon Theatre advertised a “Spotacular” cartoon feature, “101 Dalmatians.” It stated the Disney film was “arf comedy, arf mystery and howlarious.”
