1970: The New Mexico Senate Public Affairs Committee in Santa Fe waded through a storm of protests from religious groups to hand a 6-5 recommendation to pass a bill that would allow Sunday liquor sales. The measure would ban Sunday package sales from liquor stores but permit bars to open from noon to midnight on Sunday at the option of local communities.
• O.J. Peterson and Jesse Wise were among a group of people passing through Tucumcari who were carrying an 80-pound wooden cross from the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The group was holding citywide rallies along the way. In Washington, the group will hold a 24-hour session of silent prayer, meditation and fasting in an effort for national brotherhood and turning to God.
• A 21-year-old man who claims Apache descent and calls himself Lone Wolf was walking through Tucumcari to his home in San Diego. He carried his boots during his trek because they were too worn out to wear comfortably. He said he’d walked for more than 4,000 miles because he believed he wouldn’t be allowed to ride his horse on a public highway. He had walked from San Diego to Michigan and was heading back home.
